On July 4, the Austrian National Council passed the MTD (Medical-Therapeutic-Diagnostic) Act 2024, updating healthcare regulations for the first time since 1992.
The new legislation, parts of which already came into effect on September 1, 2024, outlines a professional framework that, for the first time, adequately includes the occupational therapy process and formally recognizes many core competencies of occupational therapists. This is a significant achievement for our profession, marking an important milestone in gaining recognition for the essential work we do.
However, despite years of negotiations by our association, the law still falls short. It does not provide for direct access to occupational therapy, missing an opportunity to enhance patient care and accessibility.
While the reform is a step forward, much remains to be done. We will continue advocating for further improvements to fully support both therapists and patients.
