Occupational therapy is a profession that, through meaningful engagement in activities, aims to preserve and utilize an individual’s abilities necessary for managing daily living, work, leisure, and recreational activities in people of all ages with various types of disabilities (physical, sensory, psychological, intellectual, or social disadvantages). It supports the individual’s maximum possible participation in everyday life while fully respecting their personality and capabilities.

To promote participation, occupational therapy uses specific methods and techniques, training in concrete skills, counseling, and environmental adaptations.

The term “engagement in activities” refers to all the actions a person performs throughout their life that are perceived as part of their identity. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable individuals to participate in activities that are meaningful and essential to their lives.
