Employment Opportunities
Occupational therapy is recognised as a shortage occupation
Yes
Bermuda has challenges with staff retention in key settings of practice. Typically once a job becomes available it will be offered to a qualified Bermudian per immigration policy. However if a suitable Bermudian has not been identified overseas recruitment will continue. If successful that position is held by a work permit holder until they contract is due to be renewed. There is also decreased awareness of the profession in the public which increases the difficulty for more positions to be petitioned for and created as well as already established positioned being available for new graduates.

Definition of Occupational Therapy in Bermuda
Bermuda Occupational Therapy Association's definition of occupational therapy in own language
Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their abilityto engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement.
An occupational therapist is a person skilled in the assessment and treatment of individuals who are limited by physical injury or illness, psychosocially function, developmental or learning disabilities, or the aging process, through the use of purposeful activity and adaptive equipment and technology in order to maximize independence, prevent disability and maintain health.
