The Emerging Role of Occupational Therapists in War Torn Countries: Advocating for Occupational Justice

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role that occupational therapists play within war-torn zones. The research will aim to answer the following questions; to describe the experiences of OT’s working within war-torn contexts. To understand the OT’s role in responding to the emerging needs. To identify and name the strategies OT’s use to enact professional agency and to describe the barriers occupational therapists face when addressing the occupational needs of their clients.
  • Procedure for completing the form: Potential participants will be sent a link to a short online screening form as the first step in the recruitment process. The form includes questions aligned with the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. Once submitted, responses will be reviewed by the research team to determine eligibility. Eligible participants will then be contacted to schedule an interview via MS Teams. Completion of the form is entirely voluntary, and participants may withdraw at any time.
  • How anonymity of data will be ensured: Participants will be asked to provide their names and contact details on the screening form for communication and scheduling purposes. However, in all stages of data analysis and reporting, pseudonyms will be used to protect participants’ identities. Any identifying information will be stored securely and separately from research data, on a password-protected device accessible only to the research team. All findings will be presented in a way that ensures individuals cannot be identified, in accordance with ethical research standards.
  • Deadline for completion/closure of form: The screening form will remain open until 18 July 2025, which is the final date for participant recruitment. After this date, no new submissions will be accepted. The research project, including data collection and analysis, will be completed and submitted to the UCT Division of Occupational Therapy by the end of September 2025.
