Education Day offers colleagues involved in the education of occupational therapists an opportunity to meet, to exchange information about educational programs at all levels, to share experiences and to plan for the future. Education Day 2010 will be held on May 3rd, prior to the WFOT Congress, May 4 -7, in Santiago, the capital city of Chile.

Education Day provides a unique opportunity to learn, discuss and debate issues and incorporate perspectives consistent with the spirit of the Congress, such as human rights, participation, and citizenship, among others. A Latin American framework, based on the work of Paulo Freire, will be used to enable us to focus on these topics in both academic and practice environments. This framework is important in enhancing community and building social capital, to promote justice and human flourishing – key themes of the Congress. For more information about the work of Paulo Freire, go to http://www.paulofreireinstitute.org/, and to http://www.caot.ca/default.asp?pageid=1266#EOII ‘Enabling Occupation II: Advancing an Occupational Therapy Vision for Health, Well-being & Justice through Occupation’ by Dr. Elizabeth Townsend and Dr. Helene Polatajko.

'Before I became involved in the organisation of the 2010 Congress I confess that I knew very little about occupational therapy practice in Latin America. I am sure many of you are in the same position. In the last 6 years of my involvement with the Congress and occupational therapists from Latin America what I have discovered is an exciting, vibrant and forward thinking professional group. Latin American occupational therapy practice addresses the unique issues of the region at both the practice and research levels but it remains a well kept secret because much of it is not published in English. Well WFOT 2010 is aiming to let the secret out and Education Day, 3 May 2010 in Santiago Chile, offers occupational therapy educators a unique opportunity to address issues of importance within a Latin American framework. The Education Day Committee is working with the Paulo Freire group, which is recognised in Latin America and other countries around the world, as promoting education which is relevant to communities, and supports the concept of social justice. This approach is also consistent with enabling progress towards the Millenium Goals, combined with the WFOT goals of supporting education for occupational therapists in resource challenged countries. This is an exciting and contemporary approach aimed at enabling educators to address the very real issues they currently face in occupational therapy education in the 21st century. There is so much to do that we want to encourage you all to start discussions with colleagues across the world via the Congress website right now, around those issues that are most important to you. The issues that are raised will form part of the dynamic and living agenda for Education Day that the Education Day Committee will develop as a result. '

Guideline for Themes
We want to provide scope for discussion in the different Occupational Therapy schools about possible themes of interest to be discussed during Education Day on May 3, 2010. We are interested in a debate that reflects the plurality of outlooks, approaches and issues of the various actors involved in the training of Occupational Therapists: lecturers, clinical teachers, practice supervisors, and other professionals linked to academic training in our discipline/profession.
Please use the form “Record or Themes” below to record the consolidation of the reflection made by the teachers/trainers teams.
It is suggested that this same guideline is used individually before moving on to the group reflection.
Please submit your completed questionnaire by 15th January 2010 by emailing to
wfot.2010.education.day@gmail.com.
